Detailed research into photographers

1. Hamey Joag
Hamey Joag Hamey Joag isn't particularly famous but is a really creative and good street photographer. I decided to do further research into Hamey Joag because I thought their work was something that I aspire mine to be like. They photograph items that appear to look out of place and therefore work really well in terms of the outcome. I think that Hamey puts a unique twist on photographs by capturing odd looking objects. I decided to focus on their work as one of my photographers because their work is a little similar to my inspiration of Mark Jenkins and therefore helps to produce some ideas for shoots. I like the fact that a lot of Hamey's work focuses on strange looking things that they have come across rather than putting those odd things in a shot and capturing it. Their work is interesting to look at and makes you question what is going on in he photograph and also why the object is there in the first place. I also like the colours that are used within their photographs because it makes them appear more professional.

Within this photograph we can see a wooden ladder that has been placed up against a fence. The wooden ladder is old-fashioned and leans up against the metal fence. The photograph uses colour to make the ladder stand out - the dark brown stands out against the green grass and grey fence. The lighting within this shot is natural. We know this because of the brightness of the entire space within the photograph and because of the shadow of the ladder than can be seen. This photograph is unique because it contains a subject that has been placed in a area that it would not usually be seen in. This works really well and makes the ladder look out of place. We know that this photograph is a street shot because of the surroundings - we can see a set of stairs and a industrial bin behind the fence in which the ladder is leaning against.

Within this photograph, we can see the corner of a caravan. We know that it is a caravan due to the fact that we can see the part of the caravan that can be pulled by a car. we can also see the windows which demonstrates what the subject is. This photograph uses colour to make the corner of the caravan stand out against the rest of it. The caravan consists of light colours such as white. green and cream compared to the duck tape that has been placed on the corner. The duck tape is a dark grey colour which contrasts against the rest of the shot. This photograph works really well because it captures something that looks odd and is different to what the naked eye usually sees when it comes to the outside of caravans. This therefore works really well and creates a good and interesting shot.

Within this photograph we can see a shot of a bent pole. The surroundings of the pole indicate that this is a street photograph. We know this because of the fences and alley in which the pole is based. The colours used within this shot are both dark and bright. The brightest part of this shot is the sky which allows for the top of the pole to stand out well. The fences are a brown/cream colour compared to the base of the pole which therefore stands out too. This pole is different to most poles that are seen within the street due to the fact that it can be seen to be tilting to the left in the photograph. This therefore makes it unique and more interesting. The lighting within the photograph is natural. We know this because we can see the blue sky which indicates that the shot is outside.

Within this photograph, we can see two separate buildings that are connected in the centre of the shot. The two buildings stand out because they're both different to one another. The wall on the left uses brown/cream colours and is plain whereas the wall on the right is white and covered in windows, doors and wires. This makes them contrast against one another. Within the shot we can also see a railing that goes from one wall to the other. This railing connects the two walls together and therefore works well within the shot. The railing uses a black colour to make it stand out against both of the walls. The lighting within this photograph is natural. We know this because of the fact that the shot has been taken outside. We also know this because of the shadow that can be seen on the wall found on the left.

Summary: After looking into Hamey's work, I am able to sum up their work. I think that Hamey's work focuses very much so on inanimate objects with 90% being based on this. Their work focuses on objects that stand out in places in which they look odd. This works really well. Their work captures the audience's attention and makes them question why the objects appear the way they do. Their work uses locations in order to capture photographs. They are not a famous photographer but appear to look skilled in what they do by producing good and professional looking photographs.

Influence: Hamey Joag has influenced me to focus more on inanimate objects rather than subjects because they look more appealing as street photography. Hamey has also influenced me to want to place objects in different areas to photograph them as well as locating objects that are already there. This would therefore make my photography project more varied and therefore more appealing to the intended audience.

2. Phillip Abbott
Similar to Hamey, Phillip Abbott is not classified as a famous street photographer but I think that his work is different and I like it. The way he photographs objects and people gives the impression that he is allowing us to follow him on what appears to be a journey. We can see a lot of photographs from activities that he participates in with his friends as well as photographing a variety of different street shots. I think that Phillip's work is interesting because it demonstrates his life in terms of what he does and where he goes. I also enjoy his  shots of skaters skateboarding around the area and performing tricks. I think that these work really well and capture my attention because I enjoy watching people skate. In terms of street photography, I think he has some really good shots which allow the audience to connect with them and go along with him on his adventures and journey.

Within this photograph we can see two bikers who have been stopped at the traffic lights. From the angle the shot has been taken at and the fact that the dashboard is in the photograph indicates that Phillip took the shot from inside the car. This photograph is intriguing purely because of the two bikers. They appear to be wearing very similar items of clothing - plain dark coloured top, black trousers and high tops along with a backpack each. This isn't commonly seen so attracts the attention of the audience. The direction in which the two are looking indicate that there is something going on with the guy's bike on the left. The lighting within this photograph is natural. We know this because of the surroundings and the fact that the sky can be seen within the shot. The colours used within this shot are quite dark. This is also influenced by the dark sky in the background.

Within this photograph we can see a shot of a girl who is sitting in the car. This photograph is interesting purely because of the facial expression of the subject. Her facial expression indicates that she is fed up and isn't happy. This sets the mood of the whole photograph. The colours used within this shot contrast against each other. The outside and interior of the car is black compared to the light colouring, hair and skin of the girl who is sitting in the driver's seat. This makes her become the main subject within the shot. The lighting within this photograph is natural due to the fact that she is outside. Having natural lighting works really well as it is not focused and therefore makes the shot look more appealing. I think that this photograph looks really good and makes you question why she is looking miserable.

Within this photograph we can see a shot of a skateboarder who is performing a trick. This photograph contains a lot of empty space which has been filled with the parking lot ground. The colours used within this shot are contrasting in terms of the subject. The ground is grey and the background is red compared to the clothing of the subject - he is wearing a white top and black trousers. This makes him stand out which is an important factor within this photograph. The skater's right arm/hand has been cut out of the shot. This indicates that the photograph was taken mid-action and therefore looks quite effective. The lighting within this photograph is natural due to the fact that the skater is performing his trick in the street and therefore uses lighting from the sky and surroundings. I think this photograph is different and uses a lot of empty space to make the skater the main focus within the shot.

Within this photograph, we can see a car that has been driven into a ditch. The car is white and can be seen to be on the wrong side of the road. The photograph has been taken from inside a car. We know this because of the contents of the shot. We can see the dashboard closest to the lens. The photograph uses colour. The car is a white car that stands out against the green grass and trees and the grey floor/road. The photograph relates to my Mark Jenkins inspired project because the car has been placed in ditch and therefore stands out within the photograph. I think that this photograph is really intriguing because it makes the audience question why on earth there is a random white car in the ditch. The photograph indicates that the street in which the car is, is used a fair amount. We know this because of the cars and lorry that can be seen on the road. I really do think that although this photograph is simple, it relates easily to my chosen project/topic.

Summary: Phillip's work is more of a journey than anything but still covers street photography due to the surroundings and locations in which most of his photographs are shot. Overall, his photographs are intriguing and tell a story which is important in terms of connecting with the audience. His work contains a variety of different scenes and objects which work really well in the shots. Phillip as a photographer takes the audience on a journey of the adventures he has taken during his time and I think this is very interesting.

Influence: Phillip Abbott influences me to want to try to tell a story with my work. By telling a story or creating a journey then I am likely to connect with the audience on a higher scale. Apart from this, there is nothing else than particularly inspires me as a street photographer.

3. Alex Webb
Alex Webb is an American photographer who was born in San Francisco and raised in New England. He has contributed to magazines like the New York Times, GEO and Time. His photography work consists of a variety of different topics and locations but focuses primarily on the third world countries. We know this because of the surroundings of the shots and the appearance of the people in them. I think that his street photography gives an insight into the lives of those less fortunate and therefore his photographs become eye openers. I think his work is informative in showing how these people live and how they cope/entertain themselves. I like the twist that he has on street photography. By photographing their struggles it makes people show sympathy to those in the shots. It also makes the audience think about their lives and how different/lucky they are compared to these people. I think that this is an important part in Alex's work and separates him from other street photographers.

Within this photograph we can see a shot of five different people who are in the street. We can immediately tell that this photograph uses depth of field because each individual is positioned at a different distance from the lens of the camera. The boy closest to the lens is seen to be spinning a ball. By looking at the blurring on that ball, it appears that he is spinning the earth in his hands. This photograph works really well because of the different people in it. The colouring seen within this shot uses both dark and light colours. This can be seen within the building in the background as well as the skin and clothing of the people in the shot. The lighting in this photograph is natural but the shot has been edited to make it appear darker and more saddening. This has been done to make the audience show sympathy to the people seen within the photograph. This works really well as it tries to connect to the audience's emotions.

Within this photograph we can see a shot of two boys playing in a long alley. The alley consists of two paths and some walls that are parallel to one another. The walls use colour to make them stand out against the dull brown road and path. The walls use colours such as blue, pink and white to contrast against the rest of the shot. The two boys are seen to be playing with a hoop and ball in the middle of the road. The boys are wearing no shirt and only shorts. They stand out against the grey background because of the colour of their shorts and their skin. The photograph was taken after the boy closest to the lens threw the ball. The shot captures the ball going through the hoop. The positioning of the ball has replaced the head of the boy furtherest away from the lens. This makes the photograph look different and therefore the shot becomes more artistic.

This photograph stood out for me immediately. The colouring within this shot is very contrasting and works really well. Within this photograph we can see a master shot of a street. The street and buildings uses dull and old looking colours compared to the stand of shoes that uses bright and dark colours. This makes the photograph look really intriguing as you question why there are such bright shoes in such a dull looking area. The placing of the shoes gives the shot a brighter life and makes it look more appealing. The sky also stands out against the dull colours in the street due to the fact that it is a bright blue. The lighting within this photograph is natural. We know this because the shot has been taken in the street and the sky can be seen - indicating that the lighting has come from the sun in the sky. This shot works well in terms of making the audience question why the box of shoes can be seen in the dull looking space.

Within this photograph we can see a shot of two people who have placed their heads in the side of a row of poles. The poles convey themselves into the centre of the photograph from the far left. This shot uses colours to make it look more appealing. The two people can be seen to be wearing a light blue jacket and a red jacket. The person who is closest to the lens has the brighter item of clothing to make them stand out more than the one further away. The right side of the photograph uses lighter colours - blues, whites and greys compared to the left side which uses a dark brownish colour for the poles. This photograph uses natural lighting. We know this because of the surroundings and the sky. This shot also uses depth of field. The poles becomes smaller - this is due to the fact that they're merging into the distance. The lighthouse in the background also uses minimal depth of field because of it's size. We know that this is not the normal size of a lighthouse and therefore we know that it is in the distance.

Summary: Alex's photography is mainly located in poorer countries and therefore tells a story - similar to Phillip. Alex's work is different to the four other photographers that I have researched into purely because of the location - his being a more 'beat down' and 'poor' area. This makes his photography work stand out well. His work contains both inanimate objects as well as people which makes his photographs more broad and more interesting.

Influence: Alex Webb has influenced me to want to use colour. I think that if I used some colour in a lot of my photographs then it would make the subject/object stand out against the background. This would work well because it would encourage people to look at the subject/object that attracts the attention of the eye. This is the only influence but I think that it is an important one in terms of attracting attention.

4. Matt Stuart
Matt is not particularly famous but is known for his street photography. I decided to research more about him because he work is quite similar to that of Mark Jenkins and therefore is easier to connect with than the other street photographers that I looked into.  His work uses bright colours and therefore his subjects stand out more. I think his work is really intriguing and he captures subjects that stand out against the rest of the surroundings/public. This was something that attracted me to his photography. I like the fact that each photograph is different to the previous one and therefore his photography is broad and this works well. His work is inspiring and influential to me as it is exactly like Mark Jenkins who is my chosen subject. Matt's work is really good and I think that it could help me with my own project because it gives me some ideas of what to do for some shoots.

Within this photograph we can see a shot of a man who is sitting on a bench. The man is seen to be leaning over so that his face is near his knees. Above him is a heart shaped ballon. The reaction of members of the public can be seen in the shot too. The colours used within this photograph are both dark and light. The man on the bench is seen to be wearing all black clothing which therefore makes him stand out against the red heart above him. The lighting for this shot is natural. We know this because of the surroundings in which the shot was taken. This photograph works really well because it captures a subject that is different and therefore captures the attention of the audience who view it. I like this photograph because of the way it captures innocent people as they walk past the man and the ballon on the bench.

Within this photograph we can see a shot of street. Within this street shot, we can see a man with his dog to the right of the screen. The dog is seen to be laying down on the floor and not moving. The dog's owner is seen to be looking directly at his dog. Further in the background we can see two people who are looking at the dog in confusion. This photograph uses colour to make the dog and man stand out against everything else. The man can be seen to be wearing a bright red shirt, black trousers and is carrying a black bag. This shot uses depth of field to demonstrate that the man and his dog are closer to the lens than the two people in the left third of the shot. We know this photograph uses depth of field because of the difference in size between the two people and the dog owner. The photograph also uses natural lighting. We know this because of the surroundings in which this photograph was taken in.

Within this photograph we can see a shot of a man who is laying down on a bench in what appears to be a park. The colours used within this shot contrast against each other. The dark green grass and black bench contrast against the man's skin and clothing - which consists of light blue jeans and a white top. The lighting of the photograph is natural due to the fact that the surroundings are outside. The man can be seen to be sleeping on the left side of the bench. His shoes has been taken off and placed next to his left foot which is positioned on the floor. The composition of the bench and the subject works really well. The angle of the shot gives it a more professional and interesting appearance compared to if it was taken straight on. The angle makes the photograph look interesting along with the contrast in colour. This shot makes you question why the man is sleeping on a random bench in the park.

Within this photograph we can see a shot of the front half of a car. The front half of the car covers the left and middle third of the space. The car can be seen to be clamped and the man whose car it is can be seen to be on the phone and holding a piece of paper. The colour contrast within this shot is really strong. The colours are really natural compared to the clamp that is on the car and the man dressed as a devil who can be seen in the right third of the shot. The devil is bright red and the clamp is bright green. The strength of these two colours indicates that the clamp has something to do with the devil. The denotation is that there is a devil standing by the car. The connotation in which someone could interrupt is that the devil placed the clamp on the car and that is why he is standing there. This therefore makes you question what is actually going on within the photograph.

Summary: Matt's work is very similar to my chosen project. His work is fairly relatable to the work of Mark Jenkins who I am using as an inspiration. Matt photographs people's reactions in a lot of his shots as well as just having the subject in some. He is similar to Mark and therefore his work is interesting to me. His work is very broad and therefore captures the attention of the audience.

Influence: Matt is one of the most influential photographers from the five that I have chosen because his work is relatable to mine. He has influenced me to want to use costumes or outfits because it makes them stand out even more against the members of the public. He has also influenced me to want to use both a inanimate object and a person in one single photograph (the man and balloon shot works really well). Making the person remain still and having the inanimate object near or next to them will create some interesting shots and will capture some photographs that have good outcomes.

5. Dylan Kasson
Dylan Kasson is not a famous photographer but I think that his work is different and each individual shot is interesting. He also has an interest in skateboarding which allowed me to connect with him. He has a couple of photographs that really intrigued me because they stood out. These photographs captured random items that had been placed in a street setting. These photographs linked into my project and therefore attracted me to want to research more into Dylan. I think that the colouring he uses in a lot of his photographs make them more appealing to the audience because they're different and eye-catching. The use of different coloured skies work really well and make you question why the photographs are like that. This is important when producing photography because you want the audience to be intrigued by your work.

Within this photograph we can see a shot of a fence which covers just over half of the space. The first thing that instantly sticks out to me is the colour of the sky. The colour of the sky is a purple which uses gradient to become lighter at the bottom. The other colours used within this shot are blacks and creams. The cream colours can be seen on the walls of the buildings and the blacks can be seen on the fence and the item which is hanging on the fence in the foreground. Although it is not 100% clear, it appears that the item is a piece of clothing of some sort. The lighting within this shot is artificial. We know this because of the shot - there are brighter parts in which have been targeted by some lights. The attention is also drawn onto the piece of clothing and questions then become asked as to why there is a random piece of clothing on a fence. It also makes the audience question who put it there.

Within this photograph we have a shot of a bicycle wheel. This is the only subject within the shot. The colours used within this photograph are simple but effective. The background is a beige colour, the frame of the bike is white and the tyre is black which stands out against the ground. The composition of the wheel is in the centre third of the shot. The wheel has been cut off slightly on the left side but there is space that can be seenon the right side. Due to the fact that we can only see the wheel and a slight part of the frame, we cannot tell whether the wheel is the front or back and therefore it makes you wonder. This shot is really simple but looks effective and different because of it's simplicity. I think that this is one of my favourite shots from Dylan's street photography.

Within this photograph we can see a shot that is filled with a lot of free space in the foreground. In the background we can see a repetitive building which slowly goes into the background and it exits the shot. In front of this building we can see a trolley which stands out due to the fact that it is the only trolley present. We know that this is a parking lot due to the drawings on the ground indicate parking spaces. The colours used within this are both quite dark and light. The darkest parts of the shot being the sky and the shadows from the building. This photograph works really well in terms of making people question what is going on because people would automatically look at this shot and wonder why there is a trolley on it's own on the middle of the path. I like the placement of the trolley because it is centred in the middle and the eye is drawn to it.

Within this photograph we can see a shot of what appears to be a ladder on a roof. The ladder leads up to another roof. The one thing that instantly stands out for me personally is the colour of the sky. Much like the first photograph I evaluated, the sky is a different colour to normal. I think this works really well and gives the photograph a different appearance. Within the photograph we can see a small number of colours, these include blacks/greys, whites, pinks etc. The lighting of the shot allows for shadow to be created behind the ladder. The ladder has been placed in the centre of the shot with the building taking up the bottom half of the shot. The top third is filled with the sky and therefore allows for some empty space. This works really well and makes the shot look slightly more interesting - the use of space vs building.

Summary: Dylan's work is also relatable to my chosen topic purely because of the way he photographs random objects/subjects in different locations. I think it works really well and makes his photos appear more interesting. His photos are very broad and do not relate to each other which makes them more appealing to the audience. The fact that there are not many photographs that Dylan has done indicates to me that he is not quite a famous photographer but has got some good and professional looking shots.

Influence: He has influenced me to want to take photographs of inanimate objects because they look really interesting and they make the photograph better. Although he has influenced me to want to do that, I think that I am still interested in doing some people shots because they work well too. I think his work has also influenced me to want to look into the backgrounds that I use and the colours and how they can change the appearance of a shot.
